Scott Maddox

While still in law school in 1993, Mr. Maddox, then 24, was elected the youngest City Commissioner in Tallahassee's history. A year later, in 1994, his fellow commissioners elected him Mayor pro-tempore, and in 1995 they elected him mayor. In 1996, the citizens of Tallahassee passed a referendum calling for a new "leadership" mayor directly elected by the residents to serve a four-year term. Tallahassee citizens then elected Mr. Maddox as Tallahassee's first leadership mayor in February 1997.

As mayor of Florida's capital city, Maddox took bold leadership steps such as unveiling the Mayor’s Initiative on Race Relations, starting the first ever Mayor’s Interdenominational Prayer Breakfast, attracting three new air carriers to Tallahassee regional airport, bringing a Challenger Learning Center/IMAX theater to Tallahassee’s downtown, overseeing a large expansion of the city’s parks, greenways and trails, and leading Tallahassee to win the coveted All America City award.

Elected by Mayors City Commissioners and City Council Members from the entire state in 1999, Mr. Maddox served as President of the Florida League of Cities. In that capacity, he advocated on behalf of municipalities on the state and federal levels. Also, as Mayor, Mr. Maddox advocated on the federal level on behalf of the American Public Power Association, including giving public testimony before key committees.

In 2003 Mr. Maddox was elected Chairman of the Florida Democratic Party, where he also served as a member of the Democratic National Committee. Described as a “rising star” by Vice President Al Gore, Mr. Maddox travels have brought him throughout the political arena, ranging from riding on Air Force II, to meeting with every Democratic contender for the Presidency since 1988.

Often called on for his opinion on politics, Mr. Maddox has made frequent appearances on CNN, MSNBC, ABC World News Tonight, NBC Nightly, FOX, CNBC, BBC and C-Span as well as radio appearances on Air America, FPR and NPR.

A graduate of Florida State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and a juris doctorate degree from the Florida State University College of Law, Mr. Maddox is a frequent lecturer in the fields of Political Science and Public Administration.
